Drilling both hands to the head in the final session, which started with the gladiators even, Al Tribuani, an eleventh grade student at Salesianum School, battered his way to a five round decision over Vince Simone, the current and previous Philadelphia Daily News Golden Gloves Champion. At the start of the fifth Tribuani tore in and took the lead in the slugfest.The referee and one judge scored for Tribuani, the other judge scored for Simone. An estimated crowd of 1,200 was a attendance record for the city at the time.

The bout at first was announced as a split decision, however a later check showed it was unanimous.
