According to The Ring, Lander appeared to tire in the closing rounds, allowing Ruffin to get the win. "But in bowing in defeat, Lander lost no friends..". The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that Lander knocked Ruffin down in the 1st round with a right hand to the head, but Ruffin was up almost immediately. Ruffin and Lander did not meet on April 10, 1941, an erroneous bout that appeared in Lander's record.
