This is Shires's professional boxing debut. At this time he is a controversial, "unruly" and outspoken professional baseball player. Gerry, who fought as 'Dangerous Dan Daly,' stated after the fight that he had been laid to take a dive. January 6, 1930, Hamilton Evening Journal.
The Michigan state and National Boxing Association boxing authorities suspended Shires on allegations that his representative had asked Battling Criss to "go into the tank" for Shires's originally-scheduled debut bout against Criss. (Shires reportedly had taken ill and that bout canceled.) But Shires was later cleared of these charges.
