Art Shires 179 lbs beat Bill Bailey 185 lbs by KO at 1:22 in round 1 of 6

  • Date: 1929-12-26
  • Location: Broadway Auditorium, Buffalo, New York, USA
  • KO at 1:22

"At the opening gong Shires dashed to the center of the ring, both hands covering his face in that funny way of his. Big Bill swung a terrific right which caught Shires in the mouth and drew blood. Both men exchanged punches and as Big Bill backed away, Shires' powerful right caught him on the point of the jaw. As his adversary staggered, Shires followed up with another right to the jaw and Big Bill struck the canvas and lay there immobile during the count." Shires then challenged "any man in the world." Associated Press

Later, on December 30, newspapers reported an "ugly rumor that the fights of Arthur (The Great) Shires were not all good clean fun." The papers claimed that Bailey was in fact "Mysterious Dan" Daly, and that Mike Haley and "Sullen Sam" Staley - whom Shires was scheduled to meet in the near future--were none other than "Bad Bill" Bailey/"Mysterious Dan."
