According to the Seattle Times, Lewis won the first five rounds as he carefully outboxed Payne who missed with wild swings. Payne ripped Lewis to the body in the 6th round, as he had him pinned against the ropes twice. In the 7th round, Payne dropped Lewis for a nine-count with a right hand. In the 8th round, Payne knocked Lewis down for a second time with a short left.
