Al Hostak 151 lbs beat Baby Joe Gans 155 lbs by PTS in round 8 of 8

In the 1st round, Hostak engaged Gans in a clinch, and then whipped over a short right hand that sent Gans down for a nine-count. The punch opened a cut over Gans right eye. After getting up Gans, was hit on the arm and sent to the canvas again. Hostak dropped him for a third time with a left hook, Gans rose again, but was hanging on the ropes at the bell. It appeared possible that Gans was playing possum, and was not as hurt as he let off, as he shoved Hostak after the round ended, before going to the wrong corner.

Gans went down a few more times in the 2nd, and his corner tossed the towel into the ring. The State of Washington did not acknowledge the throwing of towels for the purposes of a stoppage, the bout was temporarily halted and after a conference between the referee and commissioner George Adams, Gans was ordered to continue in the fight or forfeit his purse.

Gans held his own the rest of the fight, as he tied Hostak up frequently. He hurt Hostak in the 6th and 8th rounds, as Hostak also injured his right hand late in the fight.
