"The fighting was full of action with both fighters landing often and hard. Cortez forced the milling with his swinging tactics and had Portillo backing up several times, but the Seattle fighter held his own and stung Cortez with a lightning left hook." Everett Daily Herald.

The Seattle Times reported that Cortez took an early lead in the bout, as he split Portillo's lip in the 2nd round, and staggered him with an overhand right to the head in the 3rd round. Portillo then won the last three rounds. The Seattle Times felt that Portillo was entitled to the decision.
