Fighter in Coma After Operation AP -- Published: January 19, 1984

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 18— Stewart Darden, a 26-year-old boxer, remained unconscious and in critical condition today after emergency surgery to stop bleeding in the brain, according to an official at Grossmont Hospital.

Darden lost consciousness after having been knocked out by Steve Acosta in the 10th round of a junior welterweight fight Tuesday night at Roller SkateLand in the suburb of Santee.

The doctors say his vital signs remain stable, the official said.

Stewart Darden , the boxer who lapsed into a coma after being injured during a fight Tuesday night, has regained consciousness after undergoing surgery at a San Diego hospital. But he is still in critical condition, the hospital said. The 24-year-old Darden, a junior welterweight, slumped to the canvass after being hit with an uppercut by Steve Acosta in the 10th round of their bout.
