Roy Gift beat Red Mayes by TKO in round 4 of 6
- Date: 1927-12-05
- Location: Auditorium, Astoria, Oregon, USA
- Referee: Billy Mack
In a wild fight, Gift was down in the 2nd round from a left to the chin. About twenty seconds after that Gift knocked Mays down with a right to the chin for a nine-count. In the 3rd round, Gift cut Mays over his right and then dropped him with a right hand to the head for a nine-count. Gift landed heavily to Mays in the 4th round, and knocked him down again. After a fierce exchange along the ropes, Mays stepped back and Gift landed a long right hand below the ribs. Mays went down in a heap, and the referee raised Mays hand and awarded him the victory on a foul. The crowd booed the verdict, and an examination by the physician determined there had been no foul. Mays was ordered back into the ring, but he remained in the dressing room. A no-contest was declared originally, but the boxing commission decided to leave the matter to the judges, who award Gift the bout via stoppage.
Referee Billy Mack's performance on the card was deemed so poor, that he was removed in the 3rd round of the main event.
