Beech sustained a deep cut over his left eye. At the start of the fifth, Jack Lazarov, Beech's manager, took a healthy swing at Referee Tony Galento, after asking Galento to stop the fight due to Neville's bad cut. The latter, however, overruled his manager and insisted upon continuing. Galento agreed and Lazarow swung. Galento sidestepped and as policemen crawled through the ropes to subdue the irate manager, "Two-Ton Tony" lifted Novak's arm in victory.
