Freeman knocked Hayes down in the 1st round with a right cross to the chin, for an eight-count. Freeman controlled the first four rounds, before Hayes began to rally. In the 6th round, Hayes wobbled Freeman with a right hand, and punished Freeman again in the 7th. Hayes eventually tired, as Freeman rallied to out-slug Hayes in the last two rounds.
