Deathpaine knocked Matthews down in the 1st round, but Matthews rallied to floor Deathpaine in the round for a seven-count. Matthews went for the knockout in the 2nd round, but was caught by a right hand to the jaw, that put him down for nine. Upon rising, Matthews would catch Deathpaine with a left hook, putting him down for nine. Both boxers were weary by the 4th round, but Matthews had the most strength remaining and after wearing Deathpaine down, he finished him with a left hook to the chin.
