Jones threw everything he had at Ray in the first two rounds, but was then pounded into submission by Ray. Jones was down for a nine-count in the 8th round on a right to the top of the head, with the bell saving him from a knockout. When Jones came out for the 9th round, with his hands hanging at his sides, the bout was stopped.
