The bout was rather tame for the first four rounds. In the 5th, Hostak sent Matthews down with a series of left hooks for a five-count, and again for a second time for a seven-count on an overhand right. Hostak had plenty of time to finish Matthews at this point, but punched himself out. The 6th and 7th rounds were slow, but in the 8th, Matthews turned up the pressure on Hostak, only to dropped by a right hand to the head by Hostak. Matthews rose at nine, but was quickly floored again by Hostak as the bell rang. Hostak quickly had Matthews on the floor for a fifth time in the 9th round, and the bout was stopped.
