Honeyghan had lost a point in the eighth for an accidental headbutt that cut Vaca and forced the bout's stoppage. Honeyghan's IBF belt was not at stake as the British Boxing Board of Control did not sanction 15 round title fights, which the IBF used at the time. Honeyghan is then stripped of the IBF belt after the fight for losing what amounts to a "non-title fight" in their eyes.
