George Colton 125 lbs beat Jimmy Connors 127 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

The luck of the Irish didn't prevail in the first "main bout," where valiant little Georgie Colton, 125, Sommerville, was given a unanimous decision over Jimmy Connors, 127 1/2, New Bedford. Colton thus achieved the "rubber" in the continuing war between the two. Connors having won the middle fight. It was not quite up to caliber established in two earlier bouts, but it was good enough. Connors vastly more experienced opened up big, digging deep to Colton's heart and tying up his right hand. He opened a gash on Colton's left eye, but elected to stay with the body. On a couple of occasions he was shaken by Colton, catching a left hook which ripped him wide open around the right eye. However, it seemed to some observers that he carried the fight down the stretch. A quick poll of ringsiders found most with cards which gave Connors 96-95, which is the way the Record American card read. However, Ref. Billy Connolly found it 98-97 for Colton, Jude Harry Sunberg had it 98-95, and Judge Eddie Ryan had it 98-96. [Boston Record American, March 17, 1962]
