Tony Valenti of Boston opened a nasty cut on the left cheek of veteran Gaylord Barnes of Trenton, N.J., Tuesday night to be awarded a seventh round TKO victory during a driving rainstorm. Valenti, at 160, had a two pound weight advantage over Barnes during the feature bout at Sargent Field. Valenti first cut Barnes on the cheek with a hard right in the fourth. He kept up a steady barrage of left hooks and jabs to the cut until it bled freely again in the seventh. After doctors examined the injury they ordered the bout stopped. Both fighters found it difficult to maintain their footing on the rain drenched canvas. They slipped to the floor several times. [The Berkshire Eagle]
