Gerry Cooney 219 lbs beat ST Gordon 187 lbs by DQ in round 4 of 6
- Date: 1978-03-17
- Location: The Aladdin, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
- Referee: Richard Green
- This bout can be seen in two parts on YouTube. Gordon appeared dead tired and apparently was not in condition for the bout.
- Gordon was holding a lot and countering here and there. The disqualification by referee Richard Greene appeared premature.
- Though Gordon was exhausted, there did not appear enough to award Cooney a TKO or a disqualification at the point the bout was stopped.
- In historical reflection, the bout should not have been sanctioned by Nevada. Cooney was a 219 pound heavyweight, Gordon was a 187 pound cruiserweight. "This is a bout which doesn't make Cooney look good. It's the wrong opponent. People are actually laughing. Hang in there, S.T." Gil Clancy in the fight commentary. "A fight fight like this is not good for boxing." Dr. Ferdie Pacheco at ringside. These comments validate the weight mismatch.
- "I feel sorry for this kid, he has no experience." noted Gil Clancy. Despite the fact Clancy said boxing wasn't for S.T. Gordon, S.T. Gordon later improved and scored major victories over Carlos DeLeon, Jesse Burnett, and Trevor Berbick.
