Davis had recently arrived in Ohio from Washington state with Jess Hopps, the brother-in-law to Seattle promoter/manager Biddy Bishop, at Hopps's urging. Per an Everett Daily Herald article of Feb. 8, Davis had fought 39 professional bouts by then. Bishop himself would soon move here and establish a stable of boxers.
