The two boxed on fairly even terms over the first four rounds, though Leftwich sustained a shoulder injury that was reported at the time as a torn ligament. Castillo took control in the 5th round, when he dropped Leftwich for an eight-count. Leftwich was down again for a nine-count in the 7th round, and was rocked over the next three rounds. Early in the 11th, Leftwich was dropped again for an eight-count, and went down for another eight-count later in the round, as he was barely on his feet as the round ended. The referee stopped the bout after the 11th round, on request from Leftwich's manager Travis Hatfield.
