Carter hurt Bassett in the 1st round with a short right to the chin. After an even second round, Bassett took control of the bout in the 3rd round. Bassett was on top of the action until the 8th round, when Carter began to go for the knockout. Carter closed with a strong 10th round, again hurting Bassett with a right hand to the jaw. Bassett's left eye began closing in the 3rd round, while Carter's left eye was cut in the 5th round. Carter was a slight underdog in this bout.
