The Portland Press Herald gave Mendes the edge on the strength of his knockdowns that were scored in the 2nd and 12th rounds. Shucco had closed strongly in the 10th and 11th rounds, with Mendes switching to southpaw in the final round.

The Portland Evening Express felt that Shucco deserved to win, and felt the final round knockdown was not enough to overcome the punishment Shucco handed out in the earlier rounds, particularly with his left hand.
