According to the Grand Rapids Herald (Herb Goldman), the fight was stopped because 'the house would not stop shouting instructions to the fighters." It was an extremely exciting and even fight and the audience became excited. Naturally this strange decision of Referee Billy St. Mary was extremely unpopular. No word if the fighters, or the referee, or both or neither, got paid.
