- Referee: Joe Mangold
Charley Fusari scored the greatest win of his career last night before 12,000 fans in Ruppert Stadium. Fusari, 141 1/2, Irvington, won in easy fashion over Freddie Archer, 144, Newark, dropping him three times for counts of nine in the first round, and again dropping him for nine in the sixth. Archer nearly collapsed as he headed for his corner. Fusari carried the fight to his more experienced, but thoroughly game rival from the start. The first knockdown came midway in the opening round when Fusari slammed over a hard right to the jaw to sink Archer for a nine count. A left and right to the chin followed by another right smashed the Newarker to the canvas a second time, with the third knockdown coming shortly before the bell. Archer never recovered from the opening battering and grew steadily weaker as the fight progressed. Although he never gave up trying. Referee Joe Mangold credited Fusari with five rounds and called the fifth even. The end came suddenly. Archer returned to his corner at the end of the sixth after being dropped again for a nine count and arising only to suffer another two-handed battering which had him pinned against the ropes unable to protect himself. The bout was halted after a consultation between Mangold and Archer’s handlers. The gate was $38,840. [The News, Paterson, NJ]
