Jackie Graves 131 lbs lost to Jimmy Joyce 132 lbs by KO at 0:27 in round 2 of 10

  • Date: 1945-11-12
  • Location: City Auditorium, Omaha, Nebraska, USA
  • Referee: Alex Fidler

The roof fell in on Jackie Graves here Monday night. The Austin Dynamiter was knocked out in 27 seconds of the second round by Jimmy Joyce of Gary, Ind. 3,000 watchers were stunned by the sudden finish, but not as much so as was Mr. Graves, manager Len Kelly. Joyce, who hadn't landed a solid blow in the first round, cut loose with a short right as Graves came tearing in. It landed flush on Graves mouth, and he was knocked flat on his back. His head hit in the center ring, and that was the reason it was a clean knockout. He remained perfectly still while Referee Alex Fidler counted 10, and it was fully two minutes before they had him revived enough to get to his feet. In the first round there was no hint of what was to come. Graves chased Joyce around the ring for the full three minutes, landing at least a dozen telling blows but scoring no knockdown. Then came the quick explosive right in the second--and instead of winning his 30th pro fight, Graves suffered his second defeat, and his first K.O. Graves weighed 130 1/2, Joyce 132 1/2.
