Fritz Holland had returned to the Northwest a month earlier after Tommy McCarthy's late April ring-death had killed the boxing game in California. [3] Holland had been taking a few months' rest from boxing. [4] By that November, however, San Francisco promoters were beginning to "take the lid off gently." [5]
