The two fought a thrilling sixth round, with Payne hurting Jones with a right to the head. Payne followed up with a heavy bombardment on Jones, who wobbled around the ring. Payne became exhausted, however, and went down to both knees for a nine-count. Both men staggered to the finish of the thrilling round. Payne fought a circling battle, but was effectively counterpunched by Jones, who made his punches count.
