The early rounds saw Conners plodding and consistently building up a lead. Even Ray Gouldman's bell at the end of each round, frequently failed to terminate the action. Williams was penalized one point in the fifth round for a low blow. He was dropped in the 7th for a mandatory 8 count. The final tabulation gave a unanimous victory to the Ohioan. Referee Lou Handler scored it 48-41 for Conners, while Judge Morrie Sherman gave it to him, 46-43, and Judge Bobby Watson saw it 46•44.
