Montgomery had a bad case of tonsilitis and vomited in the dressing room before the fight. He and manager/trainer Joe Gramby decided to go through with the fight as to not hurt Herman Taylor's promotion. "There was never a thought of backing out," Gramby said.

The two fought a thrilling back-and-forth 3rd round, with Shapiro initially hurting Montgomery, battering him for much of the round. Montgomery turned things around before the round ended, and hurt Shapiro. Montgomery battered Shapiro in the 5th and 6th rounds, before Shapiro began to rally in the 7th round. Shapiro hurt Montgomery again with a right hand to the jaw in the 8th round. Shapiro won the last two rounds, as well, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, though not by as decisive margins.
