After a slow start, Montgomery controlled the bout from rounds two to five. Shapiro took over in the 6th round, as Montgomery's attack slowed down, as Shapiro scored with light blows in retreat. After losing the 8th round to a foul, Montgomery opened up in the 9th round, though both judges still gave the round to Shapiro, and closed with an even stronger 10th round. The 10th round proved decisive for Montgomery, as he won on all three cards.
