Ray Actis 168 lbs beat Buddy Holzhauer 174 lbs by TKO in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1937-09-24
  • Location: Dreamland Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA
  • Buddy Holzhauer, the former Napa Valley amateur, was punched to the canvas in the tenth last night by the superior experience and heavy lacing power of Ray Actis of San Francisco at the Dreamland Arena. From the third round forward, Actis made the move on Buddy, known here as Riverside Red, until the kill in the last round. Holzhauer, game to the finish, left his mark on the Excelsior district mauler in the form of a cut delivered in the second but received it back in the ninth when Actis landed a sledgehammer, cutting Buddy’s eye. Experts agree that Holzhauer, only 19, needs experience in the ring before he is fit to tackle men like Actis. Seconds tossed in the towel in the tenth, after Actis landed a blow that sent the blonde youth to the canvas on his head. He got up at the count of nine, but the towel ended the fight.
