Ivan Alvarez 132 lbs beat Junior Jones 130 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Only win in last 15 bouts in the career of journeyman Ivan Alvarez, who had been knocked out by future WBO World Featherweight champion Steve Luevano in the first round of his previous bout.
  • Jones was down in the seventh round from a hip punch kidney shot, which appeared to be improperly scored as a knockdown. Jones protested the knockdown. Alvarez knocked down Jones again in the eighth round with a looping right hand, a good punch. Jones landed more punches than Alvarez, but his timing was off and his legs were not there. Alvarez was the more effective aggressor in the bout.[[1]]
  • The television commentators urged Jones to retire during and after this bout, base on his ring performance. His heart was there, not the rest.
  • Jones showed heart in his last bout. He had his best round in the tenth and final round, which he won. His timing gone, his legs weakened from getting hit too much, after going down twice, Jones still had enough left in the tenth for a final effort, but lacked knockout power.
