Leroy Roberts 147 lbs beat Ted Whitfield 148 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1966-11-03
- Location: Exposition Building, Portland, Maine, USA
- This was a tuneup fight for Whitfield's fight with Pete Toro, on November 14, 1966, in Boston.
Leroy Roberts, 147, of Philadelphia, ended at 24 the victory string of Ted Whitfield, 148, Amherst, Mass., by winning a unanimous decision from the New England welterweight champion in a bristling ten-round bout at the Exposition Building last night. It was Whitfield’s first defeat as a pro. There were no knockdowns. Using a height and reach advantage, Roberts speared Whitfield repeatedly with hard lefts to the head and body and landed effective combinations that rocked Whitfield several times. Roberts, who has won 17 of 19 (BoxRec 8 of 10) professional bouts, weathered Whitfield’s rallies without distress in the second and third rounds and began to take full command in the fourth. He won the fifth by a wide margin with a series of right hands to the head, and when Whitfield moved inside, he fought the rugged Bay Stater to a standstill. The defeat probably cost Whitfield a January bout with Curtis Cokes for the world’s title. Whitfield is fight-ranked. [Evening Press, Portland, Maine. November 4, 1966]
