Bob Simmons 168 lbs lost to Joe DeNucci 165 lbs by RTD in round 6 of 10

  • Date: 1967-09-26
  • Location: Auditorium, Bangor, Maine, USA
  • Joe DeNucci, 165 pounds, hammered Bob Simmons, 168 pounds, out of commission Tuesday night to take a seven-round technical knockout before 600 boxing fans at the Bangor Auditorium. DeNucci started Simmons on the way in the third round when he planted an overhead right smack on Simmons’ left eye. Simmons’ orb was DeNucci’s target in the fourth, and he shot a series of right overhands and crushing left hooks into Simmons' body and head. Referee Jim Sullivan examined Simmons’ eye after the fourth and permitted him to come out for the fifth. DeNucci shot out of his corner with the bell and nearly got Simmons out of there with a “sucker shot” to the head. The punch landed high but packed sufficient authority to send Simmons spinning across the ring into a corner. DeNucci kept after Simmons and scored a second jolt that left Simmons flat-footed. Simmons survived the fifth and got through the sixth with a badly battered left eye. Sullivan asked for a medical ruling, and Dr. George Horton ordered the fight stopped, giving DeNucci a TKO victory in seven. [Ringside report by Bud Leavitt, Bangor Daily News]
