This decision was unpopular with fans who went after referee Eddie Burns, feeling that Roche deserved the decision. Roche fought a rough fight, continuously holding and using his elbows inside. Charvez scored a nine-count knockdown in the 1st round, after pummeling Roche with both hands. Roche recovered, and appeared in the eyes of the San Jose News to have the better of the action after that. Referee Burns stated that he only gave Roche the 7th round, and handed Charvez the decision due to Roche's tactics.
