Costner was ahead going into the final round, when he scored four knockdowns of Varona to get a stoppage. Costner scored the first two knockdowns with rights to the jaw for nine-counts, and then dropped Varona a third time with a left hook. The 4th knockdown came on a right hand, that drove Varona to the ropes. Varona was on his way up, when the bout was stopped.
