Dawson was knocked down at the end of the 11th round, through the ropes, and was saved by the bell. Dawson who thought the bout was scheduled for 15, not 12, was informed of this fact before the final round. He came out and put Patrick down twice to score a dramatic victory. It was believed that Patrick was leading at the time of the stoppage.
