Al Priest 155 lbs beat Freddie Cabral 154 lbs by TKO in round 5 of 10
- Date: 1945-10-29
- Location: Mechanics Building, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
- Referee: Johnny Martin
Cabral showed unbelievable courage. But for a minute in the first round and a surge late in the second his body and chin shook from the redhead’s constant smashes. In the fourth round Cabral never landed a punch. Cornered for fully two minutes with his hands dangling helplessly by his sides, Cabral’s head seemed about to be loosed from his body when Red ripped uppercut after uppercut off his chin. Seconds worked feverishly over him once they managed to haul him away from a neutral corner where he stood completely oblivious to his surroundings. His eyes were glazed while they broke “bombs” under his nose in an attempt to revive him. Yet, somehow, he managed to answer the bell for the last round and he wobbled crazy-legged towards the center of the ring. Another terrific left crashed against his defenseless jaw with Priest pushing him into the ropes following the blow. Another left and Martin wisely pulled Priest away when it was clear to all that Cabral couldn’t survive another punch. [Clif Keane, Boston Globe]
