Both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin, felt De Guzman deserved to win, with the Advertiser scoring it 5-3-2 in rounds, and the Star-Bulletin 5-2-3 in rounds. De Guzman completely closed Horiguchi's left eye, and had him bleeding from the nose as early as the 1st round. Horiguchi pressed the fight, and set a tremndous pace; while De Guzman landed the sharper and cleaner punches, and made Horiguchi miss many of his blows. De Guzman did land a couple butts early in the bout, that may have cost him.
After the fight the fans of De Guzman rioted and refused to leave the Civic Auditorium for nearly half an hour. De Guzman's purse was $821.20.
