This was a close fight. Trulmans hurt Wells in the 9th round with a right hand to the jaw, and again in the same round with a left hook. Trulmans landed at least four low blows, one of which forced Wells to take a three minute rest in the 4th round. The crowd booed the decision, favoring Wells. The San Diego Union favored Trulman 5-4-1 in rounds, The San Diego Tribune favored Wells 3-2-5.
