Both fighters came out in the first round and were defensive for the first minute or so, but then it was a brawl. Nothing but hard hits, and both men got rocked back and saved by the ropes several times. Finally, 40 seconds into the third, Vargas wound up taking a combination that ended with a left hook right to the chin, which literally lifted him on his toes, and sent him down for a ten-count. He didn't get up for a minute or so, but eventually left under his own power, to a standing ovation for a valiant effort in his debut fight.
