After being hit by three hard lefts from Shandel, Baer staggered his opponent with a right to the jaw. As Shandel backed away, Baer hit him with another right hand to the jaw, and put him to the canvas. Shandel rose to one knee at the count of five, but failed to rise and was counted out. The San Francisco Chronicle felt that Shandel could have beat the count, but a quick knockout was inevitable in their eyes, and Shandel's left eye had been blackened by the end of the opening round.
