  • Date: 1953-10-23
  • Location: Palais des Sports, Paris, Paris, France
  • Ernie (The Rock) Durando of Bayonne, N.J., shocked Charles Humez and 12,000 fans by knocking out the favored Frenchman at 2:30 of the sixth round with a right-left combination. Humez took the count on one knee and leaped to his feet about a second after Referee Rene Scheeman reached “10.” Waving his arms wildly and yelling at the officials, Humez claimed he had beaten the final count. Durando suffered cuts above and below his right eye. It was the first time Humez had been knocked out in 69 fights.
