Romero hurt Thompson with two left crosses and a right hook in the 1st round, but was unable to finish Thompson who covered up in a corner effectively. Thompson appeared to have recovered to begin the 2nd round, and after Romero had landed some more left hands on him, he dropped Romero with two straight lefts. Romero rose at eight, but was floored again with a right to the chin, and the referee stopped the fight as Romero staggered to his feet.
