Allen Matthews 159 lbs lost to Freddie Steele 162 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1936-10-21
- Location: Civic Auditorium, Seattle, Washington, USA
- Referee: Tommy McCarty
Matthews won the first two rounds. Steele took the 3rd, and Steele appeared to have Matthews groggy in the 4th round. Steele staggered Matthews with a right in the 5th round, and followed up with left hooks, only to be staggered himself with a left hook before the end of the round. In the 6th round, Steele knocked Matthews down for an eight-count with a right hand, but Matthews again battled back strongly before the round was over. Steele unleashed another savage attack in the 8th round, but again Matthews battled back. One of Steele's right hands in the 8th round, would split his glove, forcing his glove to be replaced.
"'That boy's a real champion,' was Matthews's only comment. 'And that was my toughest fight,' said the champion.'" Tacoma News Tribune
