- Date: 1936-12-15
- Location: Crystal Pool, Seattle, Washington, USA
- Referee: Tommy McCarty
- Judge: Eddie O'Neill
- Judge: Al Rosenberg
Matthews won the 1st round, as he staggered Sikes with a right hand. Sikes won the 2nd round, and then dropped Matthews with a right hand in the 3rd round, as he won the round by a large margin. Sikes would win the 4th round, with Matthews coming back to take the 5th round. In the 6th round, Matthews staggered Sikes with a left hook, but Sikes recovered quickly to floor Matthews with a right hand. Matthews staggered to his feet at the count of three, and then went down to the canvas again without being hit. Though Matthews could have been disqualified, referee McCarty stated that Sikes had left the neutral corner and was standing at his elbow, so the count had been halted and no disqualification was necessary. The two would fight an even 7th round, with Matthews having a slight edge in the 8th round.
Trailing entering the 9th, Matthews began to batter Sikes around the ring, particularly with the left hook, dropping him once in the round, prompting Sikes corner to throw in the towel, which was ignored. Sikes went down three more times in the 10th round, courtesy of Matthews left hook. Sikes was on the floor at the final bell.
