Charley Coates 170 lbs beat Ernie Collins 180 lbs by TKO in round 6 of 10
- Date: 1939-04-14
- Location: Olympic Arena, Reno, Nevada, USA
- Referee: George Cunningham
From the Reno Evening Gazette: "Charles Coates, 170-pound Los Angeles negro, was awarded a technical knockout over Ernie Collins, 180-pound Shoshone Indian, at the end of the sixth round of their scheduled ten-round main event at Olympic Arena here last night. Referee George Cunningham awarded the fight to Coates at the suggestion of his manager, George Griffing, after the latter made a hasty examination of cuts on both of Collins' eyes. Later Griffing declared that his charge had received a deep cut over his right eyelid and that he did not wish to take any chances. An old cut over the Shoshone boy's left eye was also reopened and bleeding. Coates led throughout the six rounds. Although Collins showed he was game, the Los Angeles negro had him outclassed."
