Ernie Collins beat Charley Coates by PTS in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1939-08-25
  • Location: Olympic Arena, Reno, Nevada, USA

  • From the Nevada State Journal: "Ernie Collins, Reno, evened the count with Charles Coates, the deadly-punching Oakland negro, who stopped the local Indian in their last fight. Collins pounded out a welldeserved ten-round decision in a slow fight, marred by Coates' stalling and holding. Collins won four rounds, Coates three and three were even. The Negro was bothered with his injured right eye, almost swollen shut. With the exception of the last round, when Coates made a belated rally, the Indian was on the aggressive. Coates, in his usual style of waiting, stood flatfooted and let Ernie do all the leading. Occasionally he opened up with heavy counter punches, but, unlike their first fight, the Indian seemed to have no fear of Coates' dynamite and punched right back. Coates took the second round with hard straight lefts, the fifth by the margin of three heavy counter punches, and the tenth when he made a desperate rally, battering Ernie with terrific rights and lefts to the head. The rest of the time Collins was boring in, scoring with slow jabs and short right chops to the head. In the fourth, the Shoshone shook up Coates with a long left hook. From the sixth through the ninth rounds, the Negro scorned to tire and continually clinched. Collins scored repeatedly at his favorite in-fighting, head to head, as Coates appeared to be saving his waning strength for the last round spurt."
