Ernie Collins 193 lbs lost to Unknown Winston 202 lbs by KO in round 3 of 10

  • Date: 1939-10-30
  • Location: Carson City, Nevada, USA

  • From the Nevada State Journal: "A few days ago we were informed that Ernie Collins would fight one Johnny Walker, who was said to be from San Diego, at Carson City Monday night. We were shown a picture of what was supposed to be Mr. Walker. It was a likeliness of a white man, fat and curly-haired, glaring at a punching bag. (...) To say we were surprised when he entered the ring is putting it mildly. Mr. had apparently been involved in a fracas with Mandrake the magician, for the short, fat, curly-haired white man of the picture had been turned into a towering, broadshouldered person of very fearsome appearance and not a hair on his dome. In addition, he was now a few shades darker than 'from Elko.' And after he had proceeded to belt out Collins in three heats, with the aid of a kick in the stomach, a terrific right to the jaw and some very hard boards beneath the canvas, Mr. 'Walker' was revealed as Eddie 'Unknown' Winston, the gentleman of color who was similarly belted out last Thursday night in Sacramento in two rounds by the aforementioned Mr. Collins."
