Nevada State Journal, Tuesday Jan 17th, 1939
Both Boxers Hit Canvas; Renoite Suffers Cut Eye
State Championship Undecided by Wild Battle
Salt Lake City, Jan 1 (U.P.) Ernie Collins, Reno Nev Indian and Areade (“Windmill”) Pearce, Springville, Utah, fought to a bloody ten-round draw here Monday night in a boxing bout with Pearce’s Utah state heavyweight crown at stake.
Eye Badly Cut
- The fight was a slugging match from the first handshake to the final gong. Both men were
down for long counts. Collins taking a nine-count just before the bell ended the third round and Pearce climbing off the canvas in the fifth. Pearce opened a cut over Collins eye early in the bout and the Reno Indian bled freely throughout the rest of the match.
- Both fighters started fast, taking the aggressive by turns, and both were often in trouble.
Flat on his back in the third round, Collins came back to hang Pearce over the ropes.
Judges Differ
- One judge voted for Pearce and one for Collins. The referee called the contest a draw.
